Case Study: Kent & Sussex Security's Riverside Tale

Tower Bridge

Kent & Sussex Security (KSS) have recently completed an installation of security cameras on the old Butler’s Wharf buildings on the banks of the River Thames. Once the home of coffee and spice warehouses, this area has been transformed into a development of prestigious apartments, restaurants, galleries and designer shops. Thames Luxury Charters own a number of piers and landing stages along the River Thames which they use to moor their luxury fleet of vessels overnight, including Butlers Wharf where they have been unfortunate enough to suffer the unwanted attention of intruders. With four beautifully appointed vessels, The Edwardian, The Elizabethan, the Dixie Queen and the Golden Salamander, TLC gave serious thought to their security arrangements and decided on a course of action.

Butler’s Wharf includes a prestigious apartment block managed by Rendall & Rittner. Keen to improve security and to their mutual benefit, Thames Luxury Charters (TLC) and Rendall and Rittner joined forces to employ KSS to install cameras on the listed buildings of Butler’s Wharf. The installation needed to show The Promenade which is in front of the Butlers Wharf buildings and also the entrance onto the wharf - and if possible identify those using the gangway. TLC also requested that they be able to view the wharf from their offices situated on board HMS Belfast, which is moored between London Bridge and Tower Bridge.

With a valuable fleet of vessels, TLC felt that they needed protection as they lay moored and were impressed by the technical knowledge and flexibility which KSS had to offer. “KSS provided us with an effective solution to our security requirements, which has already been proved on two occasions since installation. Being able to view the Pier from a PC has presented other uses for the system improving our management of both craft and employees. We have and will continue to happily recommend KSS”, comments Chris Cook, TLC Operations Manager.

In order to give the optimum coverage required, KSS used three colour/monochrome cameras set inside weatherproof housing which was mounted onto the side of Butler’s Wharf buildings viewing The Promenade, wharf entrance gate and vessels moored alongside. As the building is Listed, these needed to be unobtrusive and sympathetic to the building. The cameras are connected to an ADSL broadband telephone line via a TeleEye III + VT transmission unit which is located in the Porter’s Lodge within the Butler’s Wharf buildings. In addition, events are also recorded along with the existing CCTV system.

This has resulted in TLC being able to view the situation at any time of the day or night over the Internet, giving complete piece of mind. The CCTV system has been instrumental in assisting the Metropolitan Police by identifying two intruders to the premises over the past few weeks. "We have enjoyed this project" comments John Jamieson, Sales Director KSS, "and knowing that we have enabled intruders to be identified is very satisfying. The area surrounding Butler’s Wharf is steeped in history and it is wonderful to see the Thames Luxury Charters vessels gracing the waterfront. All in all a beautiful sight for tourists and residents alike, and we are proud to be able to contribute to keeping this a safe and attractive environment."
