Case Study: Kent and Sussex Security says "Cheese!" for the cameras

Huge Cheese Company, London

It's hard cheese for thieves and vandals at the Huge Cheese Company, London, now that a robust CCTV system has been installed by Kent and Sussex Security Limited. This is because the cameras are not only sited to cover the most vulnerable areas, internally and externally, but they are also tamper resistant and designed to withstand physical attack.

The Huge Cheese Factory is located in London's New Covent Garden Market and is an importer and wholesaler of cheeses from France, Italy, Ireland, Australia and elsewhere. The company has been trading for 14 years and has customers that include restaurants, hotels, food service companies, sandwich bars and delicatessens.

The cameras are sited at several locations, including the main entrance and the cold store. Condensation was a problem at this latter location, until the cameras had acclimatised to the conditions.

As a central part of the system, Kent and Sussex Security installed a sophisticated Dedicated Micros 8-way digital recorder to ensure excellent image quality - especially when compared with traditional tape-based systems.

Other advantages of digital technology include instant retrieval on playback (there is no tape to rewind); no need to change video tapes; recording only occurs when motion is detected; remote monitoring through a telephone line is possible; and the system can be linked to the customer's own computer LAN (Local Area Network).

The cameras themselves are V27 ArmorPlate models from the Silent Witness range. These were originally designed for prisons and are ideal for use where they are at risk from physical attack. Features of the V27 include a high-impact, hard coated polycarbonate dome, a heavy duty, all weather cast metal housing and tamper resistant screws.
